CENTAUR Project Reaches Milestones with Cold Case Review and Hot Case Evaluation

On 11 April 2025, the CENTAUR Horizon Europe project hosted an online meeting with Advisory Board members to present the outcomes of the Demo Review for Cold Cases (DR-CC) and the Preliminary Demo Results Evaluation (PDRE). The session provided an opportunity to review the implementation of cold cases (focused on historical crisis scenarios) and to assess findings which will inform the next stages of the project.

The meeting centred on two core activities: the DR-CC and PDRE, marking the completion of Milestones 6 and 7. These milestones form part of CENTAUR’s phased approach to testing, validating, and refining its climate and crisis-related indicators.

A key part of the agenda focused on the cold case demonstrations, which involved applying CENTAUR’s indicators to past events to simulate preparedness and response. More than 250 datasets, spanning 37 indicators and indexes across seven use cases for urban flooding and food and water security, were processed and reviewed in the context of various scenarios. These exercises supported the evaluation of the indicators’ performance and their applicability to different use cases.

This review addressed key aspects such as the refinement of data visualisation and metadata components to ensure clarity and consistency, with identified issues being corrected throughout the process. These findings contribute to CENTAUR’s ongoing work to improve the effectiveness and reliability of its tools.

The session also included a discussion on the next phase: hot and cold-hot case demonstrations. These will explore the use of indicators in more recent or unfolding situations, providing an opportunity to test them in conditions closer to operational settings. A recent cold-hot case of the 2024 floods in Valencia was presented to illustrate this approach, alongside timelines and preparations for upcoming cases.

CENTAUR Demo Review for Cold Cases and the Preliminary Demo Results Evaluation Meeting – Demonstration Timeline

In addition to the use case reviews, the meeting featured updates on user engagement as well as presentations outlining upcoming activities, including the continued refinement of indicators.

The meeting marked a key step in CENTAUR’s timeline, helping to consolidate recent progress and align upcoming activities with project objectives. As the project moves into the next phase, ongoing input from Advisory Board members and users will continue to play a significant role in shaping its development.

The project team thanks all participants and Advisory Board members for their contributions to the meeting.
